Hey Frans!
One of the top hair questions I get asked regularly is, “How do you refresh your kid’s curls in the morning?” Ya’ll know the struggle — curls tend to get tangled, matted, and put up a fight when you try to revive them after a good night of sleep.
I often do my kid’s hair at night, especially if I know we have to get up early the next morning or we are going to be pressed for time. I spray it down, style it, diffuse it, and then put it up in a loose pineapple. In the natural hair community, a pineapple refers to a ponytail that is placed on top of the head, or even closer to the forehead. This keeps the hair from getting too “smooshed” at night. Be sure it’s loose (I use 2 wraps of the ponytail holder vs my usual 3) so that it doesn’t pull the ponytail to tight and straighten out those gorgeous curls that you are working so hard to maintain.
Okay Shay, so how do you protect P’s curls at night?
She sleeps on a satin pillowcase but when I really want to preserve her curls, I use a satin sleep bonnet to keep it all together. One of my favorite bonnets is the Ebonnet by EboniCurls. It has a satin lining, a drawstring, and does a pretty good job of staying on her head at night. She’s not too much of a wild sleeper, but it rarely comes off her head. The Ebonnets come in both kids and baby sizes (the tiny ones are adorable!) so they are perfect for your little ones. P loves it because she can “look like Mommy” in her hair bonnet at night. Lol
Got it! Now how do you go about re-styling Day 2 curls?
When it comes to refreshing the product in my kid’s hair, truth be told, I’m not a big fan of curl refresher sprays. I feel like a spray bottle with leave-in conditioner and lukewarm water is pretty effective, but I will say that Ouidad’s Botanical Boost Curl Energizing & Refreshing Spray and Curls Curly Q’s Moist Curls Moisturizer have made it into our routine. The Ouidad product is a very lightweight spray that refreshes the product that you used for styling, while the Curly Q’s spray is better for putting moisture back into thirsty strands, so it just depends on what the needs are for that day. I lightly spray their hair, and scrunch any areas that need a little bit more “life”, and then I got over any frizzy edges with a little Mielle Organics Honey & Ginger Edge Gel. I follow up by using my Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother to pick their curls from the root to restore volume.
I hope this answers some of your questions, but feel free to comment if you have any additional questions related to our morning routine. Also, make sure you SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube Channel. I will be posting more videos, including MJ’s Odell Beckham Jr. hair transformation, soon!
